The North Platte Public Schools Foundation, in conjunction with the North Platte High School, is excited to announce the 2018 NPHS Distinguished Alumni Award!  A committee of Foundation Board Members, NPHS Administrators and NPHS Alumni and community members began the selection process in December.  These outstanding alumni of NPHS will be honored in North Platte on Friday, April 6th, at the Holiday Inn Express as part of the Foundation's Education After Hours event. 

The 2018 NPHS Distinguished Alumni are:

Mr. Joe Staroska (Class of 1992), Outstanding Accomplishments in Business and Service to the North Platte Community:

Mr. Joe Staroska was nominated by his wife Wendy Staroska. Mr. Staroska is a 1992 graduate of NPHS and went on to attend the University of Nebraska Lincoln while also serving in the Army National Guard.  He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and a Masters in Communication from UNL. He pursued law school in Chicago and was accepted to 3 before deferring to pursue his business ventures in North Platte.  He served in the Army National Guard from 1991-2005.  In 2004 Joe, along with his business partner Scott Erickson purchased Weathercraft Roofing.  Together they have expanded their business to 15 locations in 5 states.  He has earned Weathercraft coveted awards including the Eagle Award and the Firestone Master Contractor.  Joe has served his community in various capacities including the North Platte Chamber of Commerce, North Platte Public Schools Foundation Board, NebraskaLand Days Board, Cody Cavalry, North Platte Ambassadors, North Platte City Board of Adjustments, Prairie Lake Boat Club Board and he is a member of First Presbyterian Church.  He and his wife Wendy have one daughter Blakely who attends Eisenhower Elementary School.

Colonel Jeff Buck (Class of 1987), Outstanding Accomplishments in the Military:

Colonel Jeff Buck was nominated by Darrell Drullinger.  Jeff is a 1987 graduate of North Platte High School where he was a national honor society member and a three year athletic letter winner.  He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Summa Cum Laude) from the University of Nebraska-Kearney in 1995. (Distinguished Military Graduate)   He earned a Master of Business Administration from Webster University and a Master of Strategic Studies in 2017 at the United Army War College.  Colonel Buck has served successfully in a multitude of command and staff positions across the world including the Pentagon.  He has served in multiple combat zones including Operation Desert Shield/Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and operation Enduring Freedom.  Colonel Buck has earned the Bronze Star (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal (six awards); Army Commendation Medal (two awards) and the Army Achievement Medal (two awards). He continues his military service and lives with his wife Michelle and sons Cody and Trevor in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. 


“Education after Hours” will be held on Friday, April 6th, from 5:30-7:30. 

The Foundation will be honoring our 2018 Distinguished Alumni and North Platte Public Schools 2017-18 Teachers of the Year, Administrator of the Year and Staff Member of the Year.  “Education after Hours” is a casual evening to celebrate public education in North Platte.  For more information on our Distinguished Alumni Program or ticket information please contact the North Platte Public Schools foundation at (308) 696-3325 or visit our website nppsf.org. 

Staff Education Grants Awarded to Three NPPS Teachers.

Three North Platte Teachers were awarded Staff Education Grants through the Class Act program from North Platte Public Schools Foundation.  Each year the Foundation offers the program, where NPPS educators can apply for  "scholarships"  to assist them towards their goal of continuing their education.

Congratulations to our 2018 Staff Scholarship Winners! Haley Milton 1st Grade Teacher at Washington. Ashley Bailey 2nd Grade Teacher at Eisenhower and Amy McBeain, Special Education at NPHS.

Haley will be pursuing a Curriculum & Instructions Reading Specialist PK-12 degree from Chadron. Read more about Haley here

Staff Scholarships are made possible by the Class Act program administered by the Foundation. Class Act relies on generous donations from North Platte Public Schools staff (current and retired) administration and educators to make these scholarships available to our educators.

The North Platte Public Schools Foundation made presentations to both Cody and Eisenhower Elementary as a result of their change wars fundraising. Mrs. Lehmkuhler's class won the district award. 

First Place:
Eisenhower Elementary: $2,325.66

Alumni, Student, Community Artwork Sought for Education After Hours

The 2017 Education After Hours event is actively seeking all levels of artists and artwork for their silent auction for this years event.  The event theme "School Spirit" hopes to encourage artwork that portrays your vision of North Platte School Spirit.  All mediums welcome.  Commitments for artwork are being accepted now with all pieces completed by March 15th, 2017.  Artwork will be put on display until the event.

Education After Hours Call for “North Platte School Spirit”Art Donations

Who and What can be entered:

We are challenging your creativity by asking you to make something that encompasses North Platte School Spirit!  Blue and Gold, Bulldog, North Platte Schools.  Think outside the box…your piece should be functional enough to display in ones home, office,  a school building or amongst  landscape.  Although thematic is our choice, we also welcome your own style.  Our goal is for you to have fun, create a one of a kind masterpiece or refurbish and rejuvenate something old into something wonderful and exciting all while benefitting the North Platte Public Schools Foundation and promoting School Spirit.

What: 

NPPSF will display the works of art at the Mckinley Education Center from March 15th-April 6.  From there the pieces will be auctioned off at the Education After Hours Event/Distinguished Alumni Banquet, a celebration of Educators and Alumni April 7th, 2017.  The end result is that the pieces will be displayed in local schools and businesses throughout North Platte. 

Any medium is welcome:  Paint, Metal, Photography, pottery, etc.

Why:

We hope that you will join us in our mission and donate a piece of your art or handi work in support of the North Platte Public Schools Foundation.  The proceeds from the art showcase and auction will help support year round programs including the Prepared to Learn which directly supports our students.

Art Showcase Artists Receive

·         A full color catalog which includes image of donation, along with your information.  The catalog is given to each guest at the event.

·         Art work on display from completion to event (approx 3 weeks)  at the Mckinley Education Center.   Media exposure including print and tv.

·         Art Showcase will be treated as an artshow and there will be prizes- including a cash prize for Best of Show.

·         Special invitation to a pre-show at the Mckinley Education center prior to the auction to view all of the pieces. 

Disclaimers:

·         All donated art work becomes the property of the North Platte Public School Foundation when submitted.

·         Artwork that is not auctioned off will be offered back to artist.

·         North Platte Public Schools Foundation reserves the right to limit the amount of pieces that are entered and/or auctioned off at any time for any reason.

7th Annual Oil Change Fundraiser nets $2450.00 For NPPSF

Gary and Judy Jones, owners of Mobil 1/Modern Tire in North Platte Present North Platte Public Schools Foundation with a check for proceeds from their annual Oil Change Fundraiser that was held October 6th. $30 from each oil change was donated to NPPSF on Thursday and North Platte Catholic Schools Endowment on Friday with a total of 170 cars serviced. In a previous article Gary stated that the reason they do the annual gift is "Its a good thing for the community. Any time you can help a student learn and grow, it is definitely a benefit for the community." The money raised goes towards the Prepared to Learn Fund which purchases items for students of modest expense but of immediate need. Things like eye glasses, school supplies, coats etc. We appreciate the Jones' efforts and are proud to have them as such generous donors to the Foundation. Read More about the fundraiser here.

New Scholarships in honor of our Alumni

The class of 1998 is seeking donations to assist in the funding of a scholarship for the late Michelle (Collins) Speer.

Michelle along with her husband and four little girls were tragically killed in a house fire on October 20, 2016 near Nehawka.  According to members of the class of 1998, Michelle is remembered as an athlete, a great student and a wonderful friend.

With your help we can make this a scholarship opportunity that will be available to North Platte High School graduates for many years.

Education After Hours was a Great Success

It was a great night honoring Butch Rasmussen, Matt Martin and Richard McNeel, who graduated from NPHS and gone on to do notable things with their lives; recognizing amazing staff in our district, Abigail Persinger, Courtney Feeney, Dee Tuenge and Vikki Carlson, who go above and beyond each day and raising necessary funds to continue the Foundation programs.
